Purpose

The Kenya National Health Terminology Service will perform the following purposes:

  1. It serves as a central authority to uniquely identify the clinical activities that occur within the care delivery process by maintaining a terminology set mapped to international standards.
  2. It provides a centralized source for the health information exchange standards and definitions, including terminologies, ontologies, dictionaries, code systems, and value sets.
  3. Using terminology services actualizes semantic interoperability, which enables accurate, consistent reporting
    and aggregation of clinical data.
  4. It facilitates the accurate exchange of information among members of the provider community, including labs, clinics, pharmacies, hospitals, and imaging centers, which leads to improved patient care decisions.
  5. It will support other architectural components such as the health facility registry and shared health record.
